Our material is designed for self-learning, with a mentor as a guide. Such learning capability is essential as the kids’ future career will span many jobs across many industries. Some of the careers and industries have not even existed, hence life-long learning is inevitable.
However students have a tendency to quickly ask mentors for help when they are stuck. We also have the tendency to answer quickly when asked. Students hence are highly dependent on others. They do not take charge of their own learning.
This behaviour could be from our traditional education system.
To nurture the habit for self-learning, we use the 3B concept in class. Using this concept, students become less dependent on mentors and begin to take charge of their learning, both as individuals and with their peers.
BRAIN
Always encourage your students to think for answers instead of expecting you to give an answer to them. Ask questions like, “Why do you think it’s not working?” or “Are you sure you’ve got the components right?”
BUDDY
If they have given up on their BRAIN, get them to ask their BUDDY for help.
BOSS
When all else fails, this is when you, the BOSS, steps in to help. Remember, you only step in when both students have exhausted all other resources or if they have annoyed their buddy a bit too much.
Do check back with the students to ensure that they have managed to solve their earlier problem. This is important to gain their confidence and trust on the 3Bs concept.
When using 3Bs concepts, practise answering questions with a question.
Instead of giving a student an answer to a question, reply with a question. Here’s an example:
